After Surviving Earthquakes and Air Raids

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

The day started like any other. At school in the middle of basketball practice, I had just made a layup. Then I felt it. Something was out of place. At first I couldn’t put my finger on it. The ground seemed to be shaking . . . Slowly, it dawned on me as the ground started moving. The whole gym was trembling and shaking like jello. Earthquake.

Anyone who’s ever been in an earthquake or survived an air raid knows the fear that wraps around your gut and curls up your spine. For one minute life as you’ve always known it ceases to exist. What happens to your life after that one long torturous minute depends on a million factors. Whether you were late for that meeting on the 21st floor, happened to be underground, whether your family was on vacation, or whether your neighbor decided to turn the lights on, suddenly has grave consequences.

Survivors of earthquakes and explosions often reenact that horrible day and wonder what could have happened if they’d done things differently. They wonder what would be if they’d just gotten out of bed on time that day or if things had gone differently if their sibling would still be alive. They also develop an uncanny ability to detect movement or abnormal noises.

After the earthquake my family survived, my young brother was shaky and scared. Anytime someone shook the table or bumped into his bed, he’d look up with scared wide eyes wondering if the new earthquake would take his life. People that have suffered through an earthquake or survived the blast of a bomb, understand what I’m talking about. Menial things stab you with shafts of fear. A firework sounds like a bomb, and a light swaying next to a fan makes you think an earthquake is hitting.

Earthquakes and bombs can’t be avoided. The best we can do is know the closest exit or the safest place to be when they strike. Not every danger in life is unpreventable though. There are some things such as the safety of your home that can be controlled. Making sure your home has a security system is important in protecting your home. While you still can’t stop an earthquake, or redirect a bomb, at least you can know you’ve done your best in the areas you can control.

Unique Struggles for this Generation’s Students

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

These days, everything seems to involve some type of gadgetry to accomplish tasks. In the morning, you roll out of bed and turn off your blaring alarm, then go to breakfast and get the coffee boiling, microwave some oatmeal, and stick some bread in the toaster. Then you grab the keys, run out of the house and jump into that giant piece of springs, wires, screws and bolts that we call a car, and race to class or work. The day only gets more complicated from there. This collective technological shift has a particularly interesting impact on college students.

The first thing many college students face, unique to this generation, is the online classroom. Most universities use one unified system and then have individual classes set up everything else. Syllabuses, assignments, due dates, tests, videos, comments, and grades, can all be posted on these sites. Students hoping to succeed at college must pay close attention to their online classrooms. Many teachers these days won’t even warn of impending assignments. After all, students will most certainly check their online classrooms every spare minute, right?

The classroom isn’t the only setting that requires technology. Even simple things like getting into the dorm require an ID card. The same ID card can be used to enter the cafeteria and can be programmed to keep track of meal plans, chapel credits, or midnight excursions. Of course, losing that ID card is slightly problematic. Now you can’t eat, receive credit for activities, or even get into your dorm. If your computer crashes or is stolen, you also run into problems and could even end up failing a class.

Technology isn’t all a bad thing though; it can be used to preserve your work. Through external hard drives, portable thumb drives, online storage sites, and other methods, students can save their hard work. There’s no reason to worry about losing anything if you back up your work. This means you can’t blame Rover for eating your assignment anymore, but hopefully you have a better backup plan anyway.

Technology can be a burden, a hassle, or a way to simplify life. A lot of it really comes down to how you use your technology. One piece of technology that should be taken advantage of is a home security system. With a security system, your home can be kept safe along with all your work. It’s just one simple piece of technology that can save you a lot of pain.

Book Review for Pretties

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Pretties, Scott Westerfeld’s second book in the Uglies trilogy, is a continuation of the stunning surprises, and intricate plotline of his first book. As the heroine, Tally Youngblood, is forced to undergo cosmetic surgery and become one of the flawless “Pretties”, the reader learns more about the perfect lifestyle and technology within the sheltered, pretty city walls. The audience is taken through a wild adventure, only this time, the heroine has become just like her enemies, pretty.

With many unpredictable plot twists, Pretties takes its readers on an incredibly unique and danger-packed adventure. Former friends become enemies, and unexpected heroes arise. As Tally struggles against the ways of the pretty world, she learns truths about herself and the strange new world in which she lives.

One fascinating part of this novel is the delicate attention Westerfeld pays to technology. While almost anything can be accomplished through technology within the city, technology has its limitations elsewhere. “Hover boards”, or flying boards, only work within the city or over veins of metal such as those found in riverbeds or train tracks. When Tally travels far enough from the pretty city she finds whole colonies of people living without any technology.

Despite all these interesting facets of Pretties, the one feature that sets it apart is the abrupt change in views that takes place. In the first book of the series, Tally is an “Ugly”, a normal human being with flaws. In the second book, Tally becomes a pretty and sees through pretty eyes. She now thinks of normal people as revoltingly ugly and finds it difficult to even look at them. This shift in attitude and personality is unlike anything I’ve ever read, and makes for a unique read.

Pretties is a book that shows the consequences of a world obsessing over popularity and image, and highlights the things in life that are truly important. So if you’re ready to learn and enjoy a journey, sit back, make yourself some coffee, and start reading Pretties. While you’re at it, you might want to make sure you are perfectly safe within your home so you don’t have to worry about security and can concentrate solely on reading. The best way to do this is to install a home security system.

How to Get the Most Use out of Your Home Security System

Friday, June 18th, 2010

A home security system has many features that are often not in use. These features can provide more protection for your family and home. Features such as auxiliary codes, setting systems on instant alarm, and using chimes, are just several aspects of a home security system.

It is vital for the homeowner to use auxiliary codes for other people using the security system. You should never allow anyone use your master code. With the master code you can put up to 6-8 different auxiliary codes in most systems. When you have service workers, guests, or young family members using the system, stay at your control at all times. The homeowner can take their code, the master code, and have total control over the auxiliary codes. This means you can’t place auxiliary codes in the system and remove them at will. It also means you have added protection and control.

Setting your security system on instant alarm is another way to add value and protection. When the entire family is home for the night, you can set your system on instant alarm. This enables the system to sound the alarm immediately by bypassing the delay setting. In order for this to work however, the entire family must be at home and not entering or leaving. Otherwise, the person entering will have no delay and the system will sound right away. The benefit to this setting is the instant warning you will receive if anyone tampers with your home while you are sleeping. When used properly, this feature is highly valuable.

The chime setting is another feature that adds more protection. This feature serves as warning to the homeowner. It is a setting that is in use when the system is in the off position. When your system is off, it makes a beeping sound to let you know a door or window has been opened. This is good for homeowners with small kids that have the ability to open these protection points. Always remember this is a quiet warning. It only works when the system is in the off position.

Using these features will serve as a tool to help protect your valuables, family, and home. Remember to always arm the security system and use some of the features discussed. Security systems are usually user-friendly, and most models have quick references right on the keypad for these features.

Summer Security

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Yes the weather is getting better. We all are looking for warmer weather and getting our yards resued from the winter throws.

As you know, the economy is still not the best. Many are still losing their jobs and not finding work.

I formed a lawn service business six years ago and I have noticed that because of the down economy many are supplementing because of their lost jobs by cutting grass. I have been seeing more and more trailers being hauled behind cars and pick-up trucks with lawn equipment on them. I’m not putting someone down for doing so, but I have heard some real war stories of people hiring these down and out people to be their lawn care person only to find several things missing from their property
