The Amazing iPhone Breaks into the Home Security Industry

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The face of the home security alarm industry is changing every day and now more than ever.  Alarm systems today are offering far more than just security.  The latest alarm systems on the market offer excellent security while also integrating elements of home automation.  In this article we will explore some of the highlights of these new Smart Home alarm systems.

The most popular feature of these new Smart Home systems is the ability to manage your home from your smart phone or computer from anywhere in the world.  These new systems come with online management programs and apps for your iPhone, Android, or Blackberry smart phones.  These tools give you access to arm and disarm your alarm as well as manage the other home automation elements of your system.

Along with remote login capability the new Smart Home systems give you the ability to add home automation devices such as lighting controls and thermostat controls.  This give you the option of controlling your lighting or appliances as well as your thermostats from anywhere in the world from your iPhone or computer.  This advanced technology offers a variety of control options such as manual control or more advanced settings such as rules and schedules that can be set for your devices.

In summary we are seeing many changes to the home security industry that is driven largely by consumer demand.  In this technologically advanced time that we live in people expect more features and more control over the electronic equipment in their home.  The new Smart Home security equipment on the market not only delivers this technology but it does so in a very sleek package that is user friendly.  This new equipment offers plenty of options for the tech savvy but delvers it in a system that can be managed by those who are not so techs savvy as well.

Growing Trends

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

With technology rapidly changing, people are continually finding it harder and harder to understand and keep their technology up to date. Security systems are one area where technological changes have many homeowners confused and overwhelmed. One particularly confusing topic is the way the security system and the monitoring station communicate. There are now a variety of different ways this communication can occur of which landlines, digital phone services, or GSMs are just a few examples. Let’s take a quick look at each of these communication methods.

Let’s start with the landline since those were the first to be used and remain the most reliable. These landlines can communicate with monitoring stations even if the electricity shuts off. This can be extremely beneficial in many instances. Landlines are relatively cheap to purchase as well, and most only cost around twenty dollars per month. However, many homeowners no longer use landlines. With newer more convenient wireless phones, some people are thinking about doing away with landlines altogether.

Digital phone service has become quiet popular in recent years. The ease and convenience of this type of service makes it popular among homeowners. For a little bit more than what you would pay for a landline service, you can get digital service. The downside to digital service is that is stops working if there is a power shortage or if the Internet goes down.

GSM technology is growing the fastest out of these three types of monitoring among security systems. Part of this is probably due to the fact that GSM monitoring is the cheapest option. GSM technology is connected to the backup power supply of the alarm, and allows for the exchange of signals through cell towers. One thing to keep in mind about this service; however, is it is designed for the alarm to send signals only. It will also have to be installed by your alarm company, possibly for an additional fee.

In the last few years we’ve seen an explosion of technological growth. Homeowners wanting to switch monitoring companies sometimes find their new company is not compatible with their landline systems. Often times, if it is not compatible, the new company will charge to send a worker out to upgrade or replace the system. Rather than just pay another fee you could look around to see if there are any other alarm monitoring companies that work with your current system or offer a better price. Making sure your technology is working for you is important to get the best out of your security system.

According to the FBI

Monday, December 27th, 2010

Every sixteen seconds a burglary takes place in America, according to the FBI. Yet, seven out of ten burglaries could have been prevented. Burglars are usually looking for quick jobs and steal things that can be easily sold. Seventy percent of the time burglars use force to gain entrance into homes. This means opened or unlocked doors and windows are used the most. During the summer, burglaries are more likely occur, especially during July and August, since many people are gone for vacation during these months. Since most burglars are looking for easy targets there are several simple steps you can take to deter them.

Simply closing and locking all doors and windows is an obvious, but vital, part of ensuring protection for your home. Often times when you’re running late to that meeting or trying to catch your plane it’s easy to forget to lock the back door or shut all the windows, but this must become a habit if you plan on keeping your house safe. If you have deadbolts, always use them. The best kinds of deadbolts have pins at least one inch in length. Another way to make sure a burglar doesn’t enter through your door is to install kick plates. As far as windows go, if they are easy to open even when locked, you might need a secondary blocking device.

Keeping up the appearance of your house can often send away burglars looking for an empty home. Letting grass become wild and overgrown, or leaving newspapers out can catch a burglar’s attention. When leaving for several days or weeks, find friends or neighbors that will be willing to mow the grass and pick up any newspapers that get delivered. Leaving the T.V. on or having timed lights that come on are also good ways to make burglars think someone is at home.

These are things that anyone can do to protect their home. The most effective way of ensuring your home is safe however, remains is to have a security system. Security systems need to be monitored by UL approved monitoring stations, and should have sirens louder than 84 decibels. They should also be routinely tested to make sure they are still working. When testing the sirens, neighbors should be notified so that they do not grow accustomed to hearing your security alarm going off. This happens all the time with car alarms. Someone’s alarm goes off and no one thinks anything of it knowing it’s probably just the owner or a plane flying close overhead. With a security system, often times the mere sight of window decals and yard signs will scare away burglars.

Taking these simple steps can make the difference between whether your home will be broken into or not. Little things like destroying personal documents, files and papers, as well as not leaving boxes of recently purchased technology outside are good practices to adopt. Yet, the most effective way to protect your home is still installing a home security system.

The Importance of Security Monitoring for Every Home

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

From obscure corners of Asia to America, security affects everyone. Yet, there are different degrees of security necessary to ensure safety. For some, security plays a part in their daily lives; there are the doors to lock and alarms to set. For others, security is something of lesser importance, and in certain places in the world there are still those places where crime rates are low and burglaries unusual. America, unfortunately, is not one of those places.

In America, home security is something many people worry about. The old glory days when people could leave their houses unlocked and unattended without fear are over. Now, locking doors and installing security systems are necessary to keep household goods safe.

Different types of housing need different levels of protection. A residential security monitoring system will be needed for most houses. Burglars can easily enter in through windows or doors if no security system is implemented. Beach condos also need a security system in order to keep them safe.

Another type of housing that needs home security is the apartment. Often times, apartments are set in parts of town that are infamous for robberies or worse. A security system in this instance cannot only protect personal items, but lives.

Whatever the type of house, home security systems are needed to protect belongings and promote safety within the home. One reliable company that provides home security is Smith Security Monitoring. This company provides high quality protection for homes across America.

Tips on Learning Chinese

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

While English has long been the universal language of business, Chinese is quickly approaching its popularity. For those attempting to do business in foreign countries, English is mandatory, but the tables are shifting. Soon, Chinese very well may be the language of trade. For those trying to learn it, there are a few things you should know from a foreigner who’s learned Chinese.

Computer programs, classes, or even tutors will aid in improving your Chinese. However, the most effective way to learn Chinese is by going to China. Simply immersing yourself in a foreign culture will automatically cause your learning curve to jump off the scale. Once you’re in China you’ll be forced to pick up on the language since many people still don’t speak English.

Another benefit to actually living in the country is you will learn about the culture and traditions. While the language is certainly important, if you don’t have a handle on the way the Chinese people think and act, you’ll be missing the whole point of communicating with them. The meaning behind certain phrases, the rules of the road, manners, none of this information can be gleaned from tutorials.

Once you’re in China, there are many ways you can pick up the language other then simply talking to those around you. For one thing, you can listen to the local radio stations or watch movies. While it may be difficult to understand at first, you’ll slowly learn new words and you can have fun while you’re at it. If you’re really struggling to understand, turn on subtitles. Movies are also a great way to learn more about the culture.

While you’re in China you’ll be busy exploring, making new friends, and learning the language. It will be an adventure you’ll never forget. While you’re there though, you’ll want to make sure you’ve taken care of everything back home before you leave. The last thing you want on your plate is to have to deal with mortgage bills past due or burglaries. The best way you can ensure your home is safe is through having a home security system.
