What To Do In Case of a Break-In

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Coming home to find books littered on the ground, vases smashed, and valuables missing is not that uncommon. Cars are looted, personal items lifted, and homes broken into all the time. Witnessing or experiencing a crime is a horrible, often times traumatic, experience. When faced with a break-in or other types of security breaches, it is important that certain steps be taken immediately. However, some people are so emotionally involved they cannot think clearly and don’t know what to do or in what order to do them. Here are several things that should be done if you find yourself in one of these unpleasant situations.

The first step is obviously to notify the police. Because some situations could be dangerous it is advised that emergency numbers such as 911, be put on speed dial. When calling the police, even if you don’t say anything, make sure you stay on the line long enough for them to track the location of the call. Don’t hang up too quickly.

The next thing you need to do is speak directly with a police officer. Don’t leave a voice message for later, don’t talk to the receptionist, request to speak with an officer directly. You can ask for an officer to come out to your house or car, or wherever you are to investigate the situation. It’s never a bad idea to get the phone number of the person you spoke with so that you can later call back and check on the progress of things.

One more thing you should do is call the police immediately. If the situation isn’t urgent it’s easy to put the call off until the next day, but don’t do it. Waiting until later could arouse suspicion as to the legitimacy of your report, as well as limit the amount of legal action that can be taken. As soon as you notice a crime you should call the police, that way the events will still be in your mind and easy to remember.

These three simple steps will help you greatly if you ever find yourself in a situation that requires immediate attention by the police. Rehearsing a course of action now will make it easier later when thinking clearly is difficult. To save yourself the pain of a break-in why not consider investing in a home security system. While one in every four houses are broken into, only one out of every sixty houses with security systems are broken into. Don’t allow your house to be broken into.

Growing Trends

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

With technology rapidly changing, people are continually finding it harder and harder to understand and keep their technology up to date. Security systems are one area where technological changes have many homeowners confused and overwhelmed. One particularly confusing topic is the way the security system and the monitoring station communicate. There are now a variety of different ways this communication can occur of which landlines, digital phone services, or GSMs are just a few examples. Let’s take a quick look at each of these communication methods.

Let’s start with the landline since those were the first to be used and remain the most reliable. These landlines can communicate with monitoring stations even if the electricity shuts off. This can be extremely beneficial in many instances. Landlines are relatively cheap to purchase as well, and most only cost around twenty dollars per month. However, many homeowners no longer use landlines. With newer more convenient wireless phones, some people are thinking about doing away with landlines altogether.

Digital phone service has become quiet popular in recent years. The ease and convenience of this type of service makes it popular among homeowners. For a little bit more than what you would pay for a landline service, you can get digital service. The downside to digital service is that is stops working if there is a power shortage or if the Internet goes down.

GSM technology is growing the fastest out of these three types of monitoring among security systems. Part of this is probably due to the fact that GSM monitoring is the cheapest option. GSM technology is connected to the backup power supply of the alarm, and allows for the exchange of signals through cell towers. One thing to keep in mind about this service; however, is it is designed for the alarm to send signals only. It will also have to be installed by your alarm company, possibly for an additional fee.

In the last few years we’ve seen an explosion of technological growth. Homeowners wanting to switch monitoring companies sometimes find their new company is not compatible with their landline systems. Often times, if it is not compatible, the new company will charge to send a worker out to upgrade or replace the system. Rather than just pay another fee you could look around to see if there are any other alarm monitoring companies that work with your current system or offer a better price. Making sure your technology is working for you is important to get the best out of your security system.

A Device that Will Not Let You Down with Your Alarm System

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

While have all heard dumb burglar stories, not all burglars are that way. Burglars are becoming increasingly more aware of their surroundings. They are learning to avoid detection and enter unprepared homes. One common way a burglar can enter a home is by disabling a monitoring system. How they manage to do this, and what you can do to prevent it, will be discussed in-depth in this article.

More and more homeowners do not fully understand the security systems that protect their homes. They purchase the systems, make sure they work, and then leave them alone. The firs step in deterring a burglar, is gaining a greater understanding of you’re security system. One particularly important aspect of a monitoring system is called the Cellular Module. This piece of equipment is something that will add greater protection to your home.

To understand Cellular Modules, you must first understand the way your monitoring system works. When a security system alarm goes off, it sends these alarms to a monitoring station through the aid of a landline phone. Once the signal is received, the monitoring station will dispatch the police or fire department. Burglars know this. So instead of walking into a trap, burglars have learned to cut the phone lines. This means the alarm will still go off, but the security system will no longer be able to communicate with the monitoring station. This enables the burglar to enter a home without triggering a response from the monitoring station or police.

Now here’s how the Cell Module can help prevent such a scenario. The Cell Module is a wireless device used in place of or with a landline phone. If the power goes off, this device has a backup supply. Also, if a burglar cuts your phone lines, the Cell Module allows your security system to continue communicating with the monitoring station. This device enables you to have complete protection all day, every day of the year.

Don’t let just anyone walk into your house. Don’t allow yourself to be robbed. Using something as simple as the Cell Module can deter clever burglars and keep you and your family safe. When you go on vacation you won’t have to worry about being robbed. When your electricity goes out you won’t have to wonder if your security system is still working or if someone is in your home. Current technology can aid in keep you safe.

Protecting Your Children from Harmful Music

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Music is everywhere. It’s in the car, on the subway, at restaurants, in theme parks, and now, with the invention of ipods and headphones, people don’t have to leave their music behind for even a second. Almost everywhere in the world there are people listening to music.

Teenagers and kids are especially likely to be found listening to music. Yet, what is it that they are spending all their time listening to? Parents often buy their child an ipod because, “everyone else has one”, but don’t even know what their child is listening to. The world is faced with a generation of niave parents when it comes to the music industry and its affects on their children.

These days, lyrics that talk about lying, cheating, stealing, committing suicide, shooting people and taking their money, and other gruesome topics, are being pounded into thousands of teenager’s and children’s brains on a regular basis. While most will claim that it doesn’t affect them or that they don’t even hear the words, statistics show this is not the case. Music can have great influence on our lives.

If you think about it, music really does affect us. If you pop in a peppy CD, you’ll start to feel more energized. If you put in a dreary song, you’ll be more depressed. The tone of the music affects us as does the lyrics. Statistics show that words affect us, especially words that are repeated. Listening to crude concepts or foul language constantly has a negative influence on listeners that can be difficult to undo.

The other problem with the music-obsessed generation is their quality of hearing is going down. Having powerful amps and loud headphones is slowly eroding their hearing. If the volume is not kept in check, these people might be faced with hearing problems later on in life. Parents need to be aware of these things and protect their children. Music certainly isn’t bad, it just needs to be monitored. If you are going to protect your children from music you should protect them in the house as well. Having a home security system is a good way to do this.

What You Need to Know Before Hiring a Web Designer

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

For those that can master it, the Internet is fast becoming a source of far-reaching power. Companies and individuals with websites are able to market themselves efficiently by setting themselves apart from their competitors. Those that aren’t present online lose valuable business. However, many people considering hiring a web designer walk into the process with little to no knowledge of the web design process. This leads may lead to miscommunications and problems further down the road, sometimes costing the business thousands of dollars.

The first step in designing any website is figuring out what the business owner or individual wants. The price, layout, theme, fonts, colors, and number of pages will all be discussed during this phase. When this stage is complete, the designer will start creating pages in a design program such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.

These designs will then be submitted to the client for feedback. The designer will then go back and tweak the site until it looks exactly the way the client envisioned it. This phase is critically important for the client. Once everything is finalized, clients will be charged additional fees if changes are made.

Once the pages are designed and have been approved, they will be created in a program like Adobe Dreamweaver. This is where things become strenuous for the web designer. They will be working with html, divs, floats, and other highly complex web design tools. Once the pages designed have been recreated in Dreamweaver, there are other small details the designer will have to manage. The pages will all be linked together, the links will be examined, and any JavaScript or other affects will be tested to make sure they are working properly.

The last step in setting up a website is to purchase a web host and domain name, and then upload the web pages. Sometimes this is done first or during the design process. This last step will enable the website to come to life. Once the site is completed, the client will receive a password that will enable them to login and update and modify things on the site. This password needs to be difficult to guess so others will not be able to login. Safety is always important, but not just when it comes to websites. It’s also important to ensure businesses and homes are safe. This can be done easily with a home security system.
